Limerick City and County is in the Shannon region, The Golden
Vale agricultural region and the Ballyhoura environment region. It has many
rivers, hills and valleys with green dairy pasture farms. Its biggest towns are
Rathkeale, Kilmallock, Bruff, Abbeyfeale and Newcastlewest. Most of the big
towns are in the East of the County while Limerick City is in the East.
Limerick is home to the highest inland mountain range in Ireland which are the
Galtee mountains. If you are a climber you will have a challenge in climbing
climb Galtee Mór.
There is an abundance of accommodation types in Limerick City and County. There
was always a hotel or guest house or bed and breakfast in each major town or
village but since Ryanir moved in to Shannon Airport the number of rooms have
increased to facilitate the increasing number of tourists.
In 2006 alone 1000 new beds were made available in the City of Limerick in the
form of The Quality Hotel, The Absolute Hote, The CLarion Suites and Apartments,
The George Hotel owned by Lynch's, The Hilton Hotel and Punches Cross Hotel.
With the Quality Hotel being the largest. It is also very well located at the
intersection of the Cork road and the Ennis to Dublin ring road around Limerick.
Limerick has many places to visit like King Johns Castle, Lough Gur, The Hunt
Museum, Clare Glens, Foynes Flying Boat Museum and of course the City itself.
Sport is a big part of Limerick life and the week is usually spent talking about
the previous weekends matches weither it be hurling or football in the Gaelic
Grounds or Rugby in Thomond Park which is the home of Munster Rugby. The larger
city hurling clubs are Patrickswell, Ballybrown, Claughán and Na Piarsigh for
hurling and Shannon Garryowen, Young Munsters and UL Bohemians for rugby.
Limerick City has undergone many changes in the past 10 years. Pedestrian areas
are now popular and many pubs, restaurants and nightclubs have sprung up around
the city, especially around the old part of the city with Nancy Blakes as the
centre point.
Accommodation can be found with bed and breakfast hotel room only self catering.
